Types of Silver
This product is Ionic silver 10ppm. Ionic means that the silver atom has a missing electron, which gives it a net positive charge (Ag+). I would like to explain a little about the different names given to silver in order to clear up a lot of confusion in the marketing of various brands. Some of the words you will often see used are:
Colloidal silver
Nano silver
Angstrom silver
Ionic silver
Mild Silver Protein (MSP)
Colloidal - Basically means something in suspension. It neither floats nor sinks in whatever medium contains it (in the case of silver, it's suspended in water). The term has nothing to do with particle size, although the ability of something to stay in suspension is to do with particle size. This may sound a little confusing. We might say something can fly, but using the size of that thing has little to do with whether it can be classed as something that can fly. An Ostrich weighs a lot less than a Jumbo Jet, but there are so many other variables, that weight has little meaning as a standalone property. Calling a product Colloidal silver is a very broad term, and one we prefer not to use.
Nano - Nano means a billionth. It's a unit of measurement, and in the sense of naming a product, a little bit vague. If it was a Kilo, what is it a Kilo of? Kilometre, Kilogram, Kilowatt? So a Nano might a Nanometre, Nanogram etc. No silver preparation will contain entirely uniform sizes even if they were referring to a size.
Angstom - As above, an Angstrom is a unit of measurement rather than a state of being. It's a ten billionth of a meter (0.0001 microns). The diameter of a Silver atom is about 2.9 Angstroms, so calling something Angstrom silver is a bit misleading.
Ionic - Ionic, as explained at the top of this page is to do with the atomic structure and electrical charge. The word Ionic comes from Ion which is a charged particle (+ or -). Our silver is about 95% Ionic, with the remainder being very small silver metal particles. We go to great lengths to make this as uniform as we possibly can. That means careful preparation and very long production times, going very slowly with a very low DC voltage and flow characteristics. By limiting the parts per million (ppm) to 10ppm, we can be confident that the amount of metal particles remains low, and the vast majority is Ionic - and remains Ionic, without over saturation causing degradation over time. It's a stable product with a very long shelf life.
MSP - Mild Silver Protein, is where larger particles of metal that are unable to stay in suspension are bound to a protein, usually a gel. These have fallen out of favour as better methods have become available to make smaller particles (smaller particles provide a much greater overall surface area than a few larger particles and are therefore far more effective). MSP is also associated with Argyria - the condition where the skin can take on a grey blue colour as heavy metals accumulate in the skin.
So you can see that there are a lot of different names, and not all of them are meaningful. There are many silver sellers, each wanting to convince you that their product is or does something special that the others cannot. I hope with the above information you will be able to see through the spin and clever marketing, and know that it is simply well made ionic silver that is the antimicrobial active ingredient. I also would like you to understand that just because we're priced 50% less than most others, it is no reflection of reduced quality. This is the product that we use ourselves daily, and to good effect.
Popular Uses of Silver
Ionic silver is not an FDA approved drug, and as such we cannot make any claims or recommendations without being in violation of their guidelines. What we will list below are some of the more popular uses that we know of. We do not claim the following as fact, but only present what has been postulated by others, or from the experiences we or others have had.
Testing - It is said, that a person should put a small amount of silver liquid on their skin before considering anything else. If the skin develops a grey/black colour like oxidisation (temporary), then perhaps there is a rare reaction to it and should be avoided. We've never seen or heard of this happening, but it would be remiss not to at least write that at this point.
Nebulizer - A nebulizer is a machine that is either a pump driven with oxygen, or more recently using ultrasonic piezo technology. The latter is usually more compact and quieter. There are even a few battery operated hand held versions that don't look that dissimilar to an inhaler that an Asthma sufferer might use. Putting a small amount of Ionic silver (perhaps 1 teaspoon) in a nebulizer allows it to get deep into the lungs. The thing about the lungs is that things will go in quite readily, but not much comes out apart from CO2, and of course the immune response (often noticed as phlegm). This is where respiratory infections can cause problems, and some infections cause such a strong reaction from the immune system that fluid build up can occur, and in extreme circumstances the person could technically drown. We've all heard the reports about H1N1 in younger people being more of an issue since, as a generalisation they tend to have a stronger immune system. Mutant black lung, which forms in the lower lung and is normally very difficult to reach and extremely dangerous, can easily be reached with a nebulizer. Silver is anti-inflammatory. Inflammation is one of the first responses of the immune system. If silver can curb that response and deal with a pathogen itself, then it could potentially very quickly get an infection under control until such a time that the body can develop an immunity to it. Some people like to use a few drops of H2O2 and/or DMSO with silver. We have read warnings that those who smoke should be careful of this however, as there may be a lot of stored nicotine, that if mobilised too quickly could be very unpleasant or even dangerous. Obviously we're not making any recommendations here, but it would seem prudent to start out just with the basic silver and go very slowly to see how your body responds before creating more complex protocols.
Burns - If you should get a minor burn, immediate application of silver can often stop any damage in its tracks. You may even find that minutes later you have trouble even seeing where the burn occurred. It also helps minimize or even completely eliminate scarring.
Cuts - Like burns, the anti-inflammatory action combined with its microbial action can moderate a wound response, disinfect and speed healing greatly.
Ear/Nose/Throat - Ear infections, sometimes in combination with a little H2O2, can be very quickly brought under control with silver. The H2O2 (3% strength) will bubble and clear out the crud and let the silver get to work.
Cut Plants - Added to the plant water will allow them to last much longer.
Vegetables - Stored vegetables, if pre-soaked in silver can also last much longer in the refrigerator. It is said that a silver dollar was added to milk in the days before refrigeration in order to extend its useful life.
Seeds - If you pre-soak seeds in silver, the germination rate can be close to 100%.
Live plants - Used on plant foliage to stop fungi, molds and rot, and avoids the use of chemicals. It is probably better not to use so much that a lot gets into the ground soil, as it may upset the balance of the soil. Just enough to get 'used up' and neutralised would be optimal.
Deodorant - Silver works equally well on the skin. It should be noted that it does not stop sweating though, and if sweating so profusely that it washes off the silver, it may limit the length of time that it is effective for. A small spray/spritzer bottle of silver can be handy. For those that suffer rashes on the skin this could be a great alternative.
Mouthwash - Can be used as a mouthwash without disturbing the delicate biofilm in the mouth like toothpaste can.
Sanitary - Both bodily and around the home, silver is a very good sanitizer, and avoids the risks associated with chemical alternatives. You can sterilize your toothbrushes for instance.
General Preventative - There are endless numbers of people that can attest to using just a tablespoon once or twice per day, and haven't had a cold in over a decade, where previously they might get perhaps two or more per year. You might also conclude that by silver taking the load off the immune system in many ways, it leaves the immune system to work on other things, so there might be more benefit than you know.
Water Purification - Can be added to suspect water in order to kill off microbes.
There are countless other uses for Ionic silver, but the above gives an overview of the kind of things it is put to use for. Your imagination is the limit.
