DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide)

DMSO: A wondrous healing compound

Dimethyl Sulfoxide or DMSO is a fantastic healing compound. It works on a holistic level to bring body-wide, systemic health benefits. DMSO was first discovered in 1866 by a Russian scientist Alexander Saytzeff who noticed that this colourless and odourless liquid had excellent solvent properties. Its therapeutic properties, however, came into light only when Dr. Stanley Jacob (then head of the organ transplant program at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland) considered DMSO while looking for an effective method to preserve organs for transplants. Dr. Jacob, aptly known as the Father of DMSO, dedicated many years of his life studying and researching this amazing compound.

DMSO Unique Healing Properties

  1. Powerful analgesic
  2. Anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory
  3. Relieves swelling; accelerates wound healing
  4. Effectively penetrates in to deep tissues
  5. Carries pharmaceutical agents across cell membranes; increases efficacy of some drugs
  6. Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral
  7. Dilates blood vessels, improves blood circulation
  8. Reduces blood clots formation
  9. Boosts immune functions
  10. Relaxes muscles
  11. Diuretic
  12. Non- toxic
These properties make DMSO better than many conventional therapies that don’t work as fast and as effectively, not to mention without significant side effects. DMSO is often misunderstood, potentially because of its solvent properties. Its reputation has been marred by lot of negative propaganda, that Dr. Jacob described as “bureaucratic and economic rather than scientific.” Decades of studies and thousands of published articles suggest that DMSO is nothing less than a miracle healing compound when the pure pharmaceutical grade and properly diluted form is used.

There is a plenty of scientific and anecdotal evidence for its use and proposed benefits. DMSO is available in 125 countries and is freely prescribed by health practitioners for a wide range of health conditions including pain, inflammation, arthritis, scleroderma, bladder inflammation (interstitial cystitis), spinal cord injuries, stroke and increased intercranial pressure.

Prescribed in 125 countries outside of the USA by GPs for various ailments

However, the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has only approved DMSO to treat interstitial cystitis, painful bladder inflammation and to preserve stem cells, bone marrow cells and organs for transplant. DMSO is a natural product (a by-product of paper manufacturing process) and can’t be patented to achieve enormous financial gains by Big Pharma. No profit obviously translates into no approval.

DMSO can be safely and effectively used to manage many diseases:

  1. Soft tissue injuries: DMSO is very effective in the treatment of acute soft tissue injuries to neck, shoulder and back, and also strains and sprains. Anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), commonly used to treat post-traumatic soft tissue injuries, are only useful in disguising the pain. These drugs don’t actually address the underlying problem, but instead conveniently hide the symptoms and offer only temporary relief often accompanied by long-term side effects such as ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, and kidneys and liver damage.

DMSO, on the other hand, works tremendously better than NSAID drugs. It treats soft tissue injuries by providing holistic healing and most importantly without side effects.

  • Reduces inflammation
  • Relieves pain and swelling
  • Allows faster healing and regeneration as it dilates blood vessels and improves blood circulation at the site of injury, thus enabling better transport of oxygen and nutrients to the damaged tissue.

  1. Musculoskeletal diseases: DMSO shows incredible potential in treating disorders that affect joints, bones and muscles including arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, tendonitis, fibromyalgia and bursitis.

  • Reduces inflammation
  • Reduces pressure, pain and swelling in the inflamed tissues; accelerates healing
  • Improves joint mobility
  • Scavenges free radicals that damage tissues by destroying the cartilage and synovial fluid in the joints
  • Penetrates deep tissue
  1. Interstitial cystitis: DMSO is the first and the only FDA approved drug used to treat this painful, chronic inflammation affecting the bladder. Click here for more information. DMSO works on many levels to bring relief in painful symptoms experienced in this condition.

  • Blocks pain and reduces inflammation in bladder
  • Acts as a vasodilator, improves blood supply and fastens healing
  • Reduces muscle contractions; relaxing bladder and pelvic muscles
  • Also used in other inflammatory genitourinary disorders such as radiation cystitis and chronic prostatitis.

  1. Skin disorders: DMSO is useful in the treatment of many skin ailments.

  • Softens scar tissue
  • Soothes burns and heals wounds
  • Reduces painful symptoms associated with scleroderma [1] [2].
  • Effective in shingles and psoriasis treatment
  • Softens abnormal thickening of connective tissue in Peyronie’s disease and keloids
  • Treats topical fungal infections, including stubborn toenail fungal infection

  1. Cancer: DMSO is effective in cancer treatment both as a standalone therapy and also when used in conjunction with some chemotherapy drugs.

  • Specifically target cancer cells
  • Binds to chemotherapy drugs and carries them to specifically kill cancer cells.
  • Increases the effectiveness of chemotherapy drugs, requiring lesser doses of toxic anti-cancer drugs (DMSO Potentiation Therapy.)
  • Improves symptoms and quality of life in cancer patients [3].

  1. Microbial infections: DMSO slows down the growth of bacteria, virus and fungi, and works through many mechanisms to boost the immune functions.

  • Increases production of white blood cells
  • Drives the action of macrophages - immune cells that specialize in digesting pathogens and even cancer cells.
  • Increases antibiotics reach
  • Increases the sensitivity of bacteria that have developed antibiotic resistance

  1. Stroke and Central nervous system injury: DMSO uses several mechanisms to reduce tissue and organ damage in ischemic stroke. It also significantly helps in managing head and spinal cord injuries and the incidents that follow nervous system trauma such as elevated intracranial pressure. [4] [5] [6].

  • Restores blood circulation and prevents paralysis
  • Dilates blood vessels and improves blood flow
  • Reduces inflammation and intracranial pressure (brain edema or swelling.)
  • Reduces blood clot formation
  • Increases urine output as a diuretic
  • Regulates blood pressure
  • Improves respiration rate

  1. Radiation exposure: Radiations lead to the generation of free-radicals that are well-known to destroy fragile cellular framework. Long-term radiation exposure can damage cell’s DNA, causing mutations that may result in cancer, premature aging, birth defects and hereditary diseases.

  • Neutralizes free radicals, protects cells against radiation damage.
  • Facilitates DNA double strand break repair [7].
  • Reduces toxic side effects and improves quality of life in cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy. [8] [9]

Concerns and Precautions

As with starting any new therapy, always review your health status, any medical history and medications you may be taking with your healthcare professional.

  • DMSO can carry along any impurity across skin and mucous membranes. Wash your hands and make sure the skin is clean, dry and undamaged before applying DMSO topically.
  • Warmth, itching or slight burning may be felt at the application site. Applying aloe vera may help.
  • Temporary garlic-like body odor and taste in the mouth.
  • Not recommended for pregnant or lactating women.
  • Use pure pharmaceutical grade DMSO. A pure solution (99.8%) will freeze into solid ice within 2 hours when at a temperature of 18.3 C (64.94 F): all you need do is allow it to melt and you can use it. The freezing and melting will not degrade the effectiveness of DMSO.
  • Avoid contact with any potentially toxic substance during and immediately after applying DMSO topically.
  • No higher concentrations than 50 percent should be applied on face and neck as these are more sensitive areas.
  • Always start with lower concentrations and gradually increase when you see no sign of irritation or when skin develops tolerance.

Consult your doctor or health advisor before using. No medical or other applications to the human body are advised or promoted for this product without expert consultation with your doctor or health advisor. DMSO is rapidly absorbed through the skin and can carry other compounds with it so misuse may be harmful. Keep out of the reach of children. We always ask that our customers consult with their healthcare providers before using any of our products.
